Teacher Entitlement Win

Teacher Entitlement Win

14 June 2023

The Member for MacKillop, Nick McBride MP, has secured a change in Education Policy that will see Teachers who transfer from interstate to take up a teaching position here, able to bring their entitlements with them.

Mr McBride became aware of the issue when he was contacted by a teacher from Victoria, Kelly Myors, who wanted to move to South Australia with her partner. When she went through the long and arduous process of registering as a teacher in this state, she was told that the entitlements she had accrued over her 17-year career weren’t transferable.

This was a huge blow to Ms Myors, who had accrued hundreds of hours in sick leave, and many hours in  annual leave.

Mr McBride then wrote to the Education Minister, the Hon Blair Boyer MP asking for change.

“I wrote to the Minister to highlight what is a huge barrier to employment. Regional areas are crying out for teaching staff. We need to make it as attractive as possible for teachers to move to fill these jobs that – for some reason - can’t be filled locally.  Not allowing experienced teachers from interstate to bring their hard-earned entitlements, is basically, unfair and unjust.”

“I am pleased the Education Minister agreed that this matter should be addressed. He has advised me that the Education Department is now implementing a change in policy that will allow interstate entitlements to be transferred to South Australia. This is a huge win for the teaching profession, and a huge win for schools in regional areas who are struggling to find staff.”

“We need to make it as attractive as possible to get teachers to move to country regions, and I hope this change in policy goes some way in encouraging that to occur.”
