Southern Ports Highway - Proposed Funding

Southern Ports Highway - Proposed Funding

03 September 2024

The Member for MacKillop, Nick McBride MP, says proposed new funding to upgrade two more sections of the Southern Ports Highway is welcome news.

In Parliament last week, Mr McBride asked the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport the Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP whether the Southern Ports Highway was going to be fixed. Mr McBride said in a survey of his electorate, nearly 20 percent of responders named the Southern Ports Highway as one of the roads in the poorest condition.

In his response, Mr Koutsantonis said in addition to the 8.3 kilometres of resurfacing works already completed, or due for completion – a further 30.1 kilometres of road is now part of the State and Federal Government National Road Safety program.

The proposed works will include lane widening, shoulder sealing, targeted pavement rehabilitation, Audio Tactile Line marking of edges and centrelines, delineation, safety barrier installation and vegetation removal.

The sections to be upgraded are 14.7 km of road from Beachport to the Southend access road, and 15.4 km from Robe to Clay Wells Road. Scoping and site investigation work is underway, with main construction expected to commence in the third quarter of 2025. Work is expected to be completed by mid 2026.

Quotes attributable to Nick McBride MP

“The Southern Ports Highway is one of the most complained about roads in my Electorate. I have been advocating to the Minister for this road to be upgraded for some time and am pleased that the State Government is listening to the concerns of those who live in MacKillop. “

“These upgrades are significant investments and will be welcome news to the many thousands of people of use this road every year.”

“The Southern Ports Highway links the towns of Robe to Beachport and Millicent. It is not only an important freight route, but is a vital road link for tourists who visit the region.”

“Too often we hear of vehicles being damaged when they hit potholes or veer off crumbling edges. I hope these proposed works will mean safer travel for all who use the road. I look forward to further discussions with the Minister to ensure that this funding is delivered as it has been proposed.”
