Drought Relief Package

Drought Relief Package

08 April 2025

Independent MP Nick McBride says he’s pleased the State Government has taken action and provided further support to drought-stricken farmers.

“This package is a huge improvement on the $18 million previously announced back in November. A further $55 million is an acknowledgement of the difficulties being faced by our farmers. It is also a ‘whole of community package’ – recognising that when times are tough for farmers – entire regional communities suffer.”

“However, I am concerned that there are many farmers who won’t be eligible for some of the rebates that have been announced. ESL relief and commercial vehicle registration fee rebates, while welcome, are only available to those who already receive the Commonwealth’s Farm Household Allowance. This allowance is both means and asset tested – and many farmers, especially those with partners who work off farm, won’t be eligible.”

“We also need to make sure the relief is easy to access. Many farmers have told me the difficulties associated with applying for grants and rebates only exacerbates what is already a stressful situation.”

“Rural financial counselling and extra mental health support is a crucial part of this package. Rural support agencies say they are under increasing pressure to provide assistance to farmers. More funding will hopefully mean more counsellors on the ground who can assist with the financial and emotional tolls of drought.”

“An extra $4 million to help charities get much needed donated hay to starving stock is also a positive move.  I, along with my Independent colleagues, have advocated for this assistance.”

“While overall – this Drought relief package is welcome, other tangible supports such as rate relief through subsidies to councils, or ‘no or low’ interest loans would have helped the hip pocket of those doing it tough.”
